This November, The Loft Cinema presents the best new short films from the world’s most respected festivals like Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, Venice and Toronto at the first-ever Loft Short Film Fest, featuring a curated selection of acclaimed, award-winning short films from around the world in programs ranging from Live Action and Documentary to Animation and Late-Night! This year, the Loft Short Film Fest will take the place of the long-running Loft Film Fest, which is on hiatus for 2020, but which is scheduled to return in 2021.

The Loft Short Film Fest 2020 will take place both theatrically and virtually, with all film programs premiering live at The Loft Cinema’s outdoor exhibition space, Open Air Cinema, followed by an exclusive, limited-time online release the following day. Films will compete for cash prizes in each program category, with the winning films to be selected by the audience!

“Presenting our first virtual festival is a testament to the dedication of The Loft Cinema staff to continue our mission of bringing new world-class films from the festival circuit to audiences in Tucson … and beyond. With the Audience Award, we’re thrilled to be able to help support filmmakers during these difficult times, and we’re happy that with our Open Air Cinema, we can add a live, in-person component to the Fest in a safe and conscientious manner, since nothing can match the excitement of watching films together,” says Loft Cinema Program Director, Jeff Yanc.

All-access Virtual Cinema Badges for The Loft Short Film Fest will be available for $50 to the general public, and $40 to Loft Cinema members. Virtual Cinema Badges can be used for viewing all online screenings only, and do not apply to the Open Air Cinema screenings.  Individual tickets for each online program will also be available for $12 to the general public, and $10 to Loft Cinema members. Access to all premiere screenings at Open Air Cinema will be available with individual tickets only. Open Air Cinema tickets will be available for $15 to the general public, and $12 to Loft Cinema members. No free passes will be accepted for these Open Air Cinema premiere screenings. Virtual Badges and individual tickets will be available for sale starting Friday, October 23 for Loft Cinema Members, and starting Friday, October 30 for the general public.

The Loft Short Film Fest 2020 is curated by The Loft Cinema’s year-round programming team, in collaboration with filmmaker, film programmer and freelance writer Ernie Quiroz, who has 10 years of programming experience working for festivals such as Telluride, SXSW, AFI, Slamdance and Phoenix, and who has served as a programming consultant for The Loft Cinema since 2018.

On the future of movie-going at The Loft Cinema, Executive Director Peggy Johnson says, “The Loft Cinema remains committed to bringing the best new films to our audience while following health and safety guidelines, and although we’re currently unable to share these films inside the theater, we’re looking forward to the day we can all gather together once again for that one-of-a-kind communal theatrical experience that Tucsonans have come to know and love from The Loft.”
