Arizona Premiere! Official 2020 Academy Awards selection of Sweden. Featuring the short film, Pointless Sisters.

Merab (Levan Gelbakhiani), a Georgian teenager descending from a line of dancers, has trained his entire life toward one goal: to dance in the Georgian National Ballet.

“Sensual and exciting … it’s a film that will make your heart soar and make you want to dance … it’s unmissable. “- Maria Lattila, Film Inquiry

In the meantime, he is a National Ensemble dancer, challenged by a demanding teacher and rigorous rehearsals. However, the most significant obstacle he faces are the romantic feelings he develops for Irakli (Bachi Valishvili), a new dancer who becomes Merab’s rival and threatens to overshadow him. Levan Akin’s third film, featuring impressive performances by two actors-dancers and a host of beautiful Georgian dance, is an elegant and heartfelt love story exploring ideas of cultural identity, sexuality and self-expression, set within the repressive limits of conservative Georgian society.  (Dir. by Levan Akin, 2019, Sweden/Georgia/France, in Georgian with English subtitles, 105 mins., Not Rated)  Other festivals: Cannes; Zurich; BFI London

Preceded by the short film, The Pointless Sisters. A documentary portrait of The Pointless Sisters, a drag group formed 34 years ago by mainly Latino men. (Dir. by Dave Sims, 2018, USA, 8 mins., Not Rated)
