SYLVIO

Showtimes
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14 AT 3:30PM | GENERAL ADMISSION: $10 • LOFT MEMBERS: $8

Preceded by the short film, The Poet and the Professor.

Sylvio is a small town gorilla in the midst of an existential crisis. He just might go bananas if he has to spend one more day at his soul-sucking debt-collection job. Deep down he yearns to express himself with his hand puppet, Herbert Herpels, and connect with the world through his experimental puppet show celebrating life’s quiet moments.

“Rich with ingenious sight gags and clever, deadpan writing.” – Dan Gentile, Austin Chronicle

When Sylvio accidentally joins a local TV show, his debut is less than stellar, thanks to a series of on-air mishaps. But viewers see Sylvio’s bungling as entertainment gold, and for better or worse, our hero makes a splash. As the show becomes a hit, Sylvio is sent on an adventure of self-discovery where fantasy and reality begin to blend into something that the hapless gorilla could have never predicted. An oddball comedy with a disarming sweetness, Sylvio is without doubt the best “puppet-loving gorilla becomes a TV star” film of the year! (Dir. by Kentucker Audley & Albert Birney, 2017, USA, 80 mins., Not Rated)

The Poet and the Professor is a dark comedic short about Ariel, an insecure writer tortured by her own desires. Ariel can’t seem to stop seeing “The Poet,” an older, volatile cinematographer who pursues his ‘art’ while taking full advantage of his rich girlfriend’s beautiful New York apartment. Ariel also can’t stop herself from loving her own professor, a depressed, married, struggling adjunct obsessed with postmodernism and addicted to pills. In this short film, Ariel must overcome a proclivity for dysfunctional affairs to find a healthier, more sustainable relationship. (Dir. by Ariel Kavoussi, 2017, USA, 22 mins., Not Rated)
